How To Wear Plaid

I had to run to the store earlier this evening because we ordered pizza, but didn’t have any ranch (yes, I have a problem). So I quickly drove up the street to the market. As I was walking down the aisle to get my necessary pizza dipping sauce, I stopped by the “seasonal” section to browse the left over Christmas candy to see if anything would catch my attention. I was instantly shocked to find that the Christmas items had already been replaced by VALENTINES.  I used to work in retail so I understand the holiday jumping but I was a little unsettled to see Valentines spilling over the shelves when December isn’t over yet.

Much like my friends at the super market, the fashion world seems to quickly move on once New Year’s comes. It is almost as if Winter ends with the holidays and Spring magically begins and although I wish that were true – especially here in Utah- there is still a lot of Winter left. So instead of moving on to the trends of Spring, I am going to keep my attention on the winter wardrobe for a little bit longer. Don’t worry I will still incorporate the new trends of 2012, but adapt them to the cold weather.

So in honor of New Years,  here is a new fashion resolution to add to your 2012 Winter Wardrobe.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .

PLAID

Yes, it is back, but in a chic-beyond-flannel- kind of way. We are going beyond the hiker 90′s look to a more feminine vibe.  Don’t be afraid to go beyond the cozy flannel texture to a newer, crisper cotton version. It has the classic feel of a plain white cotton blouse, but with a patterned upgrade.

1. Asos $40.00,  Dr Denim Checked Shirt
2. ModCloth $54.99, Citrus Back and Relax Top
3. Asos  $81.81, Wrangler Lurex Check Shirt
4. JCrew $78.00, Perfect Shirt in Tartan

Whether you decide to go with a Cotton or Flannel version of the Plaid Blouse, make sure and steer clear of the hiking boots. Instead, give the top an updated feminine vibe by tucking it into a pair of trouser jeans – regular or high-waisted. Then finish it off with a pair of platforms. This combination will create a feminine look.

Although a Plaid Blouse can be a statement in itself, don’t be afraid to pair it with other statement worthy textures like a chunky knit sweater, tweed, menswear, leather skirt and some textured tights. Have fun with your Plaid and don’t be afraid to get a little crazy and mix it with something unexpected. Remember there really aren’t rules when it comes to style.

And for a little more inspiration the image below is from the JCrew Winter 2012 Catalog and currently adorns my inspiration wall – I love the way she combined the Gingham Top with the Plaid and that necklace! Who says Plaid isn’t sexy?
